Smart water meters
Smart meters help keep your water flowing
Smart meters help us understand how water is used across our network so we can keep clean, clear, great-tasting tap water flowing to your home. They also help you see how much water you're using, so together we can protect this precious resource for future generations.
By 2035, all water meters in the UK will be smart, with water companies rolling them out over the coming years.
When will smart meters be fitted in my area?
The map below shows when we’ll start work in each area across the region to fit and replace meters. This is a 10-year replacement programme, and we’re prioritising the oldest meters first. We’ll contact you directly when it’s time for your upgrade.

When will I be able to see my water usage online?
A smart meter needs to connect to the LoRaWAN network before you can view your usage online. Our network partner is rolling out this network in the areas shown on the map. This means your meter may not be connected straight away, but we’ll let you know as soon as your water usage becomes available to view in the app and online.
If you apply for a water meter now, you’ll receive a smart-enabled meter but if your area isn’t yet on the map, your meter won’t be connected until the network reaches your area. Please keep checking the map for updates on when we’ll be in your area.
FAQs

I have a water meter and I'm billed by it
If we're already using your water meter to bill you, you don’t need to do anything, your billing will remain the same. We’ll let you know when your meter is connected to the network, then you’ll be able to enjoy all the benefits of being smart.
I have a water meter, but I'm not billed by it
If we're not using your water meter to bill you, this means you’re billed by your rateable value. This is based on the location and size of your home, and it means you could be paying more than you need.
If you've had a smart meter fitted but aren’t billed by it yet, you can make the switch to metered billing today. You can still view your usage anytime when you’re connected, and we’ll let you know if you would save.
If you would like to switch to metered billing, you can contact us on 0333 321 4933.
Water meters have changed a lot over the years.
Our new smart meters measure your water use and automatically send readings through a secure network.
Once your smart meter is connected to the network, you can track your daily, weekly, and monthly usage in our app and online account. It gives you a clearer understanding of how much water you’re using.
Having a smart meter also means your bills are more accurate. They can also help spot leaks early before they cause damage or impact your bills.
