Reducing flooding risks in South Stanley

We're working with Durham County Council and the Environment Agency to help reduce the risk of flooding in South Stanley through the Northumbria Integrated Drainage Partnership. 

As part of the project, more than 1,800 metres of new surface water pipes will be installed. These pipes will help carry rainwater away from homes and reduce the amount entering the combined sewer system. This will also help reduce spills from storm overflows during heavy rainfall.

Together, we're investing £8.3 million in the scheme, with work expected to be completed by summer 2027. Alongside this project, we're also carrying out additional work in Stanley to reduce storm overflow spills and help protect local watercourses.

Leam Lane pipe upgrade project

We're carrying out important work in Leam Lane, Gateshead to replace 22km of older water pipes. This will help us keep water supplies safe and reliable for local homes and businesses. The work follows our recent pipe upgrade project in nearby Felling.

Once the new pipes are in place, they will help reduce the risk of leaks and bursts and support a better water supply for our customers and the local community.

This project is part of a £74 million investment across the North East. Over the next five years, we'll replace more than 360km of older water pipes to help provide a strong and reliable water network for the future.

Safer cycling in Howdon

Working with North Tyneside Council, we've installed new pedestrian guard rails and tactile paving to make crossing at the busy junction near the entrance to Howdon Sewage Treatment Works safer and easier. The improvements help cyclists, pedestrians and site traffic move through the area more safely by improving visibility and encouraging people to take a moment before crossing.

These changes are part of our commitment to looking after the communities we serve. They also support our wider investment at Howdon, helping us prepare for future work while maintaining safe and reliable access for residents and everyone who uses the route each day.

New Hendon water pipes protecting future supply in Sunderland

We've just finished replacing more than 3km of ageing water mains, helping to protect the quality and reliability of supplies for people in Sunderland.

Our team have been working on the project with our partners United Infrastructure, in the Ashby Street area of Hendon, constructing a total of 3.4km of new water pipes.

The £1 million project is part of a wider £74 million investment in the water network across five years, which will see a total of more than 360km of old pipe replaced across the North East.

Water mains renewal programme

Our teams, working alongside our partner United Infrastructure, are replacing older water pipes at a number of locations across Teesside.

In Middlesbrough, work to replace 23km of water mains in Park End is nearly complete, while a further 12km of pipes will soon be renewed in nearby Pallister Park. We're also replacing 5.6km of water mains in and around Ormesby Bank, in Redcar and Cleveland.

Replacing older pipes helps reduce the risk of bursts and interruptions to supply, while improving the reliability of the water network for customers.

This work forms part of a £74 million investment programme that will see more than 360km of older water mains replaced across the North East over five years.

Craster bankside improvements

We're improving the bankside at Craster from Monday 29 June, with work expected to take around six months. These improvements will help protect the coastline from erosion and extreme weather, while also helping to safeguard local paths and nearby infrastructure.

We know how important Craster is to both local people and visitors, so we'll do all we can to keep disruption to a minimum while the work takes place.

Once the project is complete, it will help protect the area for the future, so people can continue to enjoy it safely for years to come.

Protecting the future of Whittle Dene Reservoir

This summer, we'll begin important improvement work at Whittle Dene Reservoir to help maintain reliable water supplies for customers across Northumberland.

The work includes upgrading key control valves, replacing parts that have reached the end of their working life, and installing new equipment to support the safe and efficient operation of the reservoir.

Our £1.2 million investment will strengthen the reservoir infrastructure and help us manage water levels more effectively, supporting reliable water supplies now and in the future.
