Investing £66 million to improve water quality for one million customers in Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland and North Tyneside.
Find out about where and when we’ll be working in your area by clicking on the map below.
We have recently completed a £30 million scheme which involved cleaning and upgrading 171 kilometres of trunk water mains, between Warkworth in Northumberland and the north of Newcastle. This phase of the programme has improved tap water quality to half a million customers in South East Northumberland, North Tyneside and the north of Newcastle.
The next phase of trunk mains cleaning work, began in the middle of February 2012 and will take approximately four years to complete. We will clean 218 kilometres of trunk water mains and a further £33 million investment will improve tap water quality to around 500,000 customers in the lower Tyne Valley, Newcastle, North Tyneside and Gateshead areas. Trunk water mains are the large diameter pipes which transfer water around the region. We are also going to take the opportunity to clean smaller diameter pipes, which directly supply water to properties.
A lot of the pipes we’ll be working on will be situated beneath highways, some of which are main routes into Newcastle and Gateshead. Where we can, we’ll try to access these from grass verges or pavements. Where we need to dig up part of a road, we’ll keep you informed of the work and do everything that we can to minimise disruption.
