Prince′s Trust Million Makers challenge

North east regional winners 2011 and 2012.

A team of 10 Northumbrian Water graduates were crowned regional winners at Thursday evening’s Million Makers event, held by youth charity The Prince’s Trust at the Lancastrian Suite, Gateshead.

The graduates raised more than £16,000, beating off tough competition from the Department of Work and Pensions, Derwentside Enterprise Agency, Places for People, Starbucks and Ward Hadaway.

Teams taking part in the Million Makers challenge are given start-up funding of £1,500 and compete over six months to raise as much money as possible for The Trust. Money raised will help disadvantaged young people into work, education and training across the North East.

Northumbrian Water’s graduates raised funds through a variety of successful events, including a masquerade ball at Durham’s Ramside Hall Hotel and a fishing day at Hury Reservoir.

Graduate Gareth Anderson, who joined the water company’s graduate development programme in September 2009, accepted the award. He said: “We were delighted when we were announced as the winning team. The challenge has been hard work, but the amount raised made it worthwhile and it’s helped us to prove ourselves within the company.

“The regional awards evening was fantastic, as we found out exactly how The Prince’s Trust plans to use the money we raised to support disadvantaged young people around the region.”

Chris Gray, from the Prince’s Trust in the North East, said: “We would like to congratulate the graduates at Northumbrian Water for raising a fantastic £16,000 for The Prince’s Trust and winning the regional final of Million Makers.

“Their efforts over the last six months have been nothing short of incredible.”

The Prince of Wales’s charity has helped more than 600,000 young people since 1976. More than three quarters of young people The Trust helped last year moved into work, education or training.
