Local autism charity puts volunteering on their agenda

05 June 2013

North East Autism Society (NEAS) has announced a brand new volunteer programme tocoincide with national Volunteering Week, (this week 1 – 7 June).

Lynn Renwick the newly appointed Volunteer Development Officer said “We are really excited to announce our new volunteer programme, and we have lots of ways volunteers can help the charity providehelp and support for children, young people and adults with autism. In these tough times we need as much help as possible and we welcome the help and support volunteers can offer.”

Volunteers are welcome in every area of the charities operation both working directly with people with autism, alongside the charities highly trained staff or behind the scenes in fundraising and administration. Lyn added, “Not everyone can afford to make a donation of cash these days, but volunteering their time can be worth a great deal. Someone helping at one of our fundraising events or a driver helping to transport a young person to an activity can make a huge difference to the charity.”

Also supporting the charity is Northumbrian water who, as part of their ′Just an hour′ scheme, has volunteered two staff teams to help with a gardening project at a number of the charity’s children’s residential homes in the Sunderland area.

Jane Morland, from Northumbrian Water′s corporate responsibility team said: “We are delighted to be getting involved with North East Autism Society and recognise the value of our support for this great. Our staff have a wealth of knowledge, skills and expertise and the company has introduced ′Just an hour′ so that we can make use of their skills for the benefit of local charities. Our structured programme of employee involvement in the community is designed to impact on education, the environment and the general wellbeing of the community. The scheme enables our employees to each give at least 15 hours of paid work time back to local communities every year.”
