The roadworks that have been in place in Morpeth town centre from 16th January to allow for essential utility maintenance works, and non-essential highway works are now complete on schedule.
The County Council would like to thank residents and visitors to the town for their patience during the works.
The works in Bridge Street began on Monday 16th January and were co-ordinated to enable work on gas and water mains to take place at the same time as preparatory cabling was laid for a new set of traffic lights at Telford Bridge.
Having listened to concerns raised by the local community during the early periods of the work, the council made alterations to the traffic management and the flow of traffic was monitored on a daily basis. To minimise delays, a team was also on standby from 7am to 7pm to facilitate immediate reaction to any issues.
Improvements to traffic management continued to be made as appropriate as the works progressed. These included the installation of extra signs to warn people of the one way system in operation and the length of time the traffic lights were green was also lengthened. A merging turn was also installed at the Telford Bridge junction to help traffic move more freely.
Regular updates were given on the progress of the works together with any changes to the traffic system and the council reiterated the message that Morpeth was open for business as usual.
Cllr Isabel Hunter, executive member for infrastructure and environment said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank people for their patience during this time. These have been essential works for Morpeth to ensure services were maintained for the town. We have made every effort to co-ordinate works so that as much work as possible could be carried out at the same time.”
“We constantly listened to the views of retailers, shoppers and residents and amended the traffic system to improve it where appropriate and I believe this has helped to keep disruption to a minimum.”
Northumbrian Water’s project manager, Gary Cassells, said: “We would like to also thank the residents, businesses and commuters within Morpeth for their patience and support while we carried out essential work to upgrade 600 metres of water main. This work will reduce the likelihood of leakage and safeguard water quality for the future. Our scheme progressed well and as a result of working seven days a week, for most weeks during the course of the work, we were able to upgrade our water pipes a week and a half ahead of schedule. The opportunity for us to utilise Northumberland County Council’s traffic management demonstrates that with sufficient planning and fore-thought a joint agency approach can be achieved.”
