Northumbrian Water win academy charity tournament

09 August 2011

A team representing Northumbrian Water won a charity football tournament in aid of SAFC Foundation at the Academy of Light on Friday.

The seven-a-side tournament was held to celebrate the launch of the ‘Foundation Challenge’, a season-long campaign in which groups of people (often companies) take part in fundraising activities for SAFC Foundation, the registered charity of Sunderland AFC.

In return, participating teams receive access to some fantastic prizes, a chance to give something back to their community and an opportunity to promote their organisation through SAFC Foundation.

Teams can have as much or as little support as they need and they can raise the funds however they choose e.g. raffles, competitions, auctions, sponsored events, fun days etc. This can involve staff, their friends and families, business contacts or even customers.

Northumbrian Water’s team ‘The Waterboys’ beat law firm Ward Hadaway in the final of the tournamet which included other teams competing from Muckles LLP and Quantum Law. Sunderland AFC legend Jimmy Montgomery presented a trophy to the winners and posed for photographs with participants.

Waterboys team captain Jonny Belmont, Project Acceptance Engineer, from Northumbrian Water said: “This is the third Foundation final we have made it through to and it’s great to finally win one!

“Northumbrian Water is a keen supporter of the Foundation which does such good work in our region. We’ve signed up again to the Foundation Challenge to raise Foundation funds, we support the Top Scorer event which celebrates achievements of those who take part in the educational programmes and we are also on the Aim High team to engage the communities of East Durham with links to our partnership Healthworks project in Easington.

Lynsey Thompson, SAFC Foundation Head of Development added: “We’d like to thank all of the teams who took part and made the day such a success. It was an exciting start to what we expect will be an interesting season of fundraising for the teams in the Foundation Challenge and we wish them all the best of luck.”

Northumbrian Water also sponsored water on the day for the teams competing.

Although the Challenge is already underway companies can still submit teams to take part. To find out more contact Lynsey Thompson on 0191 551 5191 or
