Radio Tyneside has struck gold in its 60th diamond anniversary year.
The hospital radio station won the gold award for the best speech package at the national Hospital Broadcasting Association’s annual presentations held in Maidstone, Kent. (Saturday 26th March).
Radio Tyneside, which broadcasts to the city hospitals, and on 1575AM and on-line, was also a finalist in the special event category for its coverage of the Great North Run.
The prestigious gold award was won by presenter Alistair Baker who featured a tour of Durham Cathedral escorted by Chapter Steward Anne Heyward which was broadcast on the station’s Sunday Supplement magazine show.
Alistair received the award from former BBC Correspondent Barnie Choudhury at the glitzy ceremony where 140 hospital radio stations from throughout Great Britain were represented and ten top awards contested.
Radio Tyneside is a registered charity run by volunteers which started broadcasting in 1951 initially to provide commentary on Newcastle United’s matches from St James’ Park. It is now a full 24-hour music, news, sport and features radio station and celebrating its diamond anniversary.
Alistair Baker, Communications and PR Manager at Northumbrian Water who presents for Radio Tyneside under his companies ‘Just an Hour’ volunteering scheme, said: "Its great fun being able to be a part-time radio presenter and helping to entertain and cheer up people in hospital. To go to Kent and bring an award back to the North East for a package recorded at one of the great world attractions which is also in the North East is the icing on our celebration cake!"
Radio Tyneside was also a finalist in the special event category for its coverage at the start of the Great North Run, an outside broadcast presented by Tom Chittenden and Dave Nicholson.
