Great Exhibition launch reaches for the sky thanks to Northumbrian Water

20.06.2018

When the River Tyne′s water is launched into the sky by giant fountains as part of the Great Exhibition of the North launch event, onlookers can be assured that they are seeing great quality H2O in action.

Once one of the dirtiest and most polluted rivers in the UK, the water quality in the Tyne has vastly improved over recent decades, having even become a leading habitat for salmon.

And water sampling conducted by Northumbrian Water to support Friday′s launch event has shown that the industrial pollution of yesteryear remains firmly in the past.

More than 20 sets of samples have been taken over recent weeks by Northumbrian Water′s Scientific Services team, in preparation of the Great Exhibition of the North launch event, to make sure the water is as high quality as the 80 days of events to follow.

Northumbrian Water is a Supporting Partner of the Exhibition, not only providing the water sampling service to the event, but also involved with and present at a number of the festival′s events over the coming weeks.

Heidi Mottram, Chief Executive of Northumbrian Water, said: "The Great Exhibition of the North is all about celebrating what is fantastic about the North of England, and we are happy to say that the water in the iconic River Tyne is something worth shouting about.

"Our region′s industrial history has, in the past, blighted rivers such as the Tyne and Tees, but work conducted by ourselves and partners such as the Environment Agency, has resulted in an amazing transformation over the past 30 years or so.

"We′re all really excited about the Great Exhibition of the North and the River Tyne will form an amazing centrepiece for the launch event and will surely form a fantastic backdrop for the visits of many thousands of people to our region over the coming week. It′s a river we can be very proud of."
