Redcar and Cleveland Leisure and Community Heart, the Redcar Beacon and seafront, Stockton′s Riverside and Darlington′s Hippodrome turned #Blue4Water this Thursday to mark World Water Day (March 22).
Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council and Stockton Borough Council, along with management at the recently-refurbished Hippodrome agreed to light up the landmarks for the occasion to help the Northumbrian WaterAid committee highlight the occasion.
World Water Day is an annual occasion aimed at raising awareness of the importance of water for people across the world.
The Northumbrian WaterAid committee of supporters and employee volunteers holds events and conducts fundraising activity for the global charity WaterAid, which aims to deliver clean water and sanitation to all people everywhere in the world.
Currently, 663 million people live without safe water and 2.4 billion do not have access to adequate sanitation - that′s one in three of the world′s population.
Andrew Blakemore, Chairman of the Northumbrian WaterAid committee, said: "It′s fantastic to see the Tees Valley turn Blue4Water to mark World Water Day.
"It′s easy, when all you have to do is turn on a tap, to take water for granted. But for hundreds of millions, it′s far from easy and life is constantly at risk from poor sanitation.
"Charities like WaterAid do amazing work to help get clean, sustainable water supplies to some of the hardest to reach places on the planet and we hope that these fantastic gestures across the Tees Valley will help others to think about and understand the importance of their work."
