Companies come together to help village wetlands project grow

The development of a community wetlands in a County Durham village has been given a boost with support from Northumbrian Water.

The water company and its partner firm, Seymour Civil Engineering, have teamed up to help create a new pond on the site in Langley Park, which has been transformed from former allotments.

During recent essential work in the village, Northumbrian Water’s team got to know volunteer Ian Dowson, who created the wetland area and is turning it into a community and educational resource.

After hearing about the project, Northumbrian Water bought the liner for the new pond, which was delivered by Seymour Civil Engineering. Volunteers from the water company spent Friday digging out the site and laying the lining, ready for it to be filled. Their time is being given through Northumbrian Water’s Just An Hour volunteering scheme.

It is hoped that the pond will become home to local wildlife, following the creation of another water feature that has already attracted newts.

Mr Dowson said: “Without the support of Northumbrian Water and Seymour Civil Engineering, we wouldn’t get to create this pond, which would have been a huge shame, because the site is developing well and we are attracting visits from local schools and other groups, such as brownies.

“We’re already supported by Natural England and the whole community is behind the project, which has seen visitor numbers of up to 530 visitors in a single day, so it is great that we are able to expand what we are doing with the support of companies such as this.”

Phil Foster, a technical support advisor at Northumbrian Water, said: “We got to know Mr Dowson during our recent work in the area and learned about the development of the wetlands. It seemed a great opportunity to say thank you to our customers in the area for their patience during the work.

“Seymour Civil Engineering were great and delivered the lining that Northumbrian Water bought, while our team came out to carry out the work as part of the company’s Just An Hour volunteering scheme, which sees more than 50% of employees donating time in work hours to great causes. We are all hoping the wetlands continue to grow and become a valuable part of the Langley Park community.”
