Scheme to tackle flooding is underway

A four-month scheme to reduce the risk of flooding to eight homes in Whitley Bay is underway.

The £850,000 Northumbrian Water programme of work began earlier this month and will be complete by the end of April.

Extreme rainfall events in recent years have overwhelmed the water company’s sewer system in the Wilton Drive area.

As a result, a detailed investigation to identify the source of flooding and to develop potential solutions was carried out.

Eight properties on Wilton Drive were confirmed to be at risk of flooding from the sewer network.

Northumbrian Water’s project manager, Ian Davison, said: “Reducing the risk of flooding to our customers is our top priority.

“This scheme, which will significantly improve the performance of our sewer network and be carried out by our contractor, ESH Construction, will involve increasing the diameter of 270 metres of sewer pipe. New underground inspection chambers, which will give easy access to the upgraded sewer system for maintenance, will also be constructed.

“We will be working in Wilton Drive and in land next to The Beacon Public House.

“We have written to residents giving them detailed information about this work and thank them for their patience in advance. If they have any queries or special requirements while we are working in the area, they should please contact us.”

A section of the Beacon Hill Public House car park will be closed from this week until Wednesday February 10 2016. The pub will be open for business as usual.

A ‘rolling’ road closured, where a short section of road is closed at a time, will also be in place along Wilton Drive from this week until Friday April 8 2016. A bus diversion will be in place during this period and will be advertised by Nexus.

Access from Wilton Drive onto Wentworth Gardens and Wilton Close will be maintained.

Construction traffic will need access to all working areas and to Northumbrian Water’s site compound, which will be located in land between Wilton Close and Earsdon Road.
