Commuters are being asked to plan ahead as essential work to clean water pipes in Newcastle moves onto City Road.
The £66 million Northumbrian Water mains cleaning programme, which will improve tap water quality for one million customers in Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland, will involve working in a number of locations on City Road from Monday, January 11.
This four-week phase of work will see the water company’s contractor, Seymour Civil Engineering, working at the junction of Pilgrim Street and Milk Market, on the City Road approach to Swan House roundabout and outside the City Road Premier Inn to clean a large diameter water main.
Due to the location of work at the junction of Pilgrim Street and Milk Market, temporary traffic lights will need to be in place for the duration of the work with temporary pedestrian crossings at key locations to maintain access.
Richard Johnston, Northumbrian Water’s project manager said: "We appreciate that this is a highly traffic-sensitive area of Newcastle and we want to make sure that road users are given the opportunity to plan their journey to avoid delay.
"We will do everything that we can to complete this essential work as quickly as possible and will keep you updated with progress. We’re working very closely with Newcastle City Council to make sure that the traffic management in place causes the least possible disruption, although we do expect there to be some delays at busy times for which we apologise."
Pressure jetting technology will be used to clean the water pipes. This method of cleaning involves using a self-propelling ‘pig’ which uses water jets to propel it along and clean sections of pipe at the same time. This technology allows longer sections of pipe to be cleaned with a minimal number of access pits, which results in less disruption.
Once this section of work is complete, the contractor will continue into areas of Walker and Byker to continue this essential programme of work.
