A million bottles of top quality tap water have been donated to local communities by Northumbrian Water.
The water company’s support for local community and charitable outdoor events, which began ten years ago, has now reached the millionth milestone.
Sarah Pinkerton, Northumbrian Water’s partnerships manager said: “Northumbrian Water is more than just a water and wastewater treatment provider – it is a regional company that is immersed in its local communities.
“We are proud to be able to support local community events by providing our bottled tap water and it’s great to give something extra back to the customers we serve.”
The one millionth bottle is expected to be given out at the Watergate 5k run in Gateshead on Thursday 27 August 2015.
Low Fell Running Club Race Director and Chairman, Alan Elders said: “Water is an essential part of any race and staying hydrated both during and afterwards is very important.
“The bottled water from Northumbrian Water is a great asset to our club, Low Fell Running Club, and all the runners from age six to 80 much appreciate it during and after running as a refreshing cool drink," he said.
Each bottle contains 250 millilitres equalling a massive 250 thousand litres of water given away, or 3125 full baths over 10 years!
The bottled water scheme for charitable events is a popular donation towards some of the county’s most successful fun runs and other outdoor activities staged by local charities.
In the North East more than 150 events were supported with bottled tap water during the past year and have included an activity weekend for the Hebburn & Sunderland Sea Cadets, the British Transplant Games and charity golf days.
Sarah Pinkerton added: “Each year we try to support as many events as possible and as well as giving a boost to the charity’s event, we also hope it will remind recipients of our top quality tap water and about the importance of staying hydrated.
“Our bottled tap water is just one of the ways we help community and charity events. We also provide support by the donation of grants from our funds held with the Community Foundation and through our employee volunteering scheme, Just an hour,” she said.
