Scheme to tackle flooding begins

16.09.2014

More than one million pounds is to be invested to reduce the risk of flooding to homes in a Newcastle suburb.

Northumbrian Water will begin the six-month programme of work in Jesmond on Saturday September 20.

Seymour Civil Engineering Ltd will carry out the £1.1 million scheme, on behalf of the water company. The scheme will reduce the likelihood of flooding to 26 homes in Burdon Terrace, Clayton Road, Eslington Terrace, Kingsland and Haldane Terrace.

Residents in the area have been invited to attend a customer information session on Thursday September 18 at Jesmond United Reformed Church, Burdon Terrace, Jesmond, NE2 3AE between 6.30pm and 8.30pm. Experts from Northumbrian Water and their contractor and consultant will be on hand to answer any queries or concerns.

Mike Ciaraldi, Northumbrian Water’s project manager, said: "The first thing we need to do, to enable us to upgrade our sewer network, is to divert a water main in Abbotsford Terrace.

"In early October, Northern Gas Networks will carry out work to protect their gas main in Abbotsford Terrace and we will then install a new sewer in the same road. Once we have completed this phase of work we will then install another new section of sewer pipe in Burdon Terrace. We will also be carrying out alteration work on identified private sewer pipes that serve homes in Clayton Road, Eslington Terrace, Kingsland and Haldane Terrace.

"I would like to encourage residents to come along to our customer information session to find out, in more detail, how this work will impact on them. Residents and commuters should be assured that we are working closely with Newcastle City Council to do all we can to keep disruption and inconvenience to a minimum."

Temporary traffic management will be in place on a small section of Abbotsford Terrace, near the junction with Burdon Terrace, while Northumbrian Water divert their water main.

A small section of Abbotsford Terrace, near to the junction with Burdon Terrace, will then be closed while Northern Gas Networks carries out their work and the sewer pipe on Abbotsford Terrace is installed.

A temporary, rolling road closure will be in place on Burdon Terrace, between the junction with Abbotsford Terrace and Tynemouth Nursery, while the new sewer is installed.

Construction traffic will need access to all working areas and to Northumbrian Water’s site compound, which will be located on a small, closed section of Burdon Terrace, next to Tynemouth Nursery.
