Flood risk is to be reduced at dozens of homes in the Gateshead area.
Northumbrian Water is to spend £1.8 million to help protect 24 properties on Naylor Avenue and Noel Avenue, Winlaton Mill, from flooding.
The work, which will be carried out by Seymour Civil Engineering Ltd on behalf of the water company, began this month and will take up to seven months to complete.
Loren Jennings, Northumbrian Water’s project manager, said: “We are going to increase the amount of waste water that our sewers can carry by preventing surface water, which runs off roads and surrounding land, from entering the pipes.
“A new pipe, which will only carry surface water and discharge into the River Derwent, is to be installed in Derwenthaugh Park. A new highway drain will also be installed along sections of Naylor, Noel, May June, Mundle and Clover Avenues.
“The sewer, which carries both waste and surface water and runs along Naylor Avenue and Noel Avenue, is to be replaced with a larger diameter pipe. Two storm water storage tanks are also to be constructed within the same vicinity.
“We appreciate that this work will cause a significant amount of disruption and we apologise for any inconvenience in advance and thank residents and commuters for their patience. Anyone who requires special assistance during the work should please contact us as soon as possible.”
It will be necessary to have traffic management in place. This will include road closures along:
• Naylor Avenue – Monday July 14 to Friday October 31 2014;
• Noel Avenue – Tuesday September 16 2014 to Monday February 23 2015;
• Clover Avenue – Friday August 8 to Monday September 8 2014;
• May Avenue – Friday August 8 to Monday October 27 2014;
• June Avenue – Monday September 15 2014 to Sunday February 22 2015;
• Mundle Avenue - Monday September 15 to Monday October 6 2014.
Resurfacing of roads will be carried out between Wednesday February 4 and Tuesday February 10 2015.
Residents who are going to be directly affected by the traffic management will be notified one week before. There will be parking restrictions between 8.00am and 6.00pm, Monday to Friday, in working areas and there may be restricted access to driveways for short periods of time.
Local buses will be diverted within Winlaton Mill while this essential work is being carried out and a shuttle bus service will be provided. Further information will be available on individual buses and from Nexus.
Construction traffic will need access to the contractor’s site compound which will be located within Derwenthaugh Park.
