Flood protection scheme to start in Ormesby

30.06.2014

An essential flood protection scheme is to start in Ormesby, Middlesbrough on Monday, July 7 2014.

Northumbrian Water is investing £160,000 to upgrade the sewer network in Spring Garden Lane. The work, which is being carried out by contractor Seymour Civil Enginering, involves the installation of a new sewer and pumping station, and is expected to take up to eight weeks to complete.

Between 2010 and 2015, Northumbrian Water is investing £150 million to help protect areas throughout the region that are prone to flooding.

Chris Austin, project manager for the scheme, said: "Reducing the risk of flooding to customers’ homes and businesses is one of our top priorities. This is just one of dozens of improvement schemes we will be carrying out throughout the region, over the next couple of years, to upgrade our vast sewer network and reduce the risk of homes flooding.

"Although we appreciate there will be disruption in the short term, we hope customers will welcome the benefits and protection the scheme brings. We are working closely with Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council to reduce the impact of the work and will do our best to minimise any inconvenience."

It will be necessary to have traffic management in place during the course of this essential work. The junction of Spring Garden Lane and Woodley Grove will be closed throughout the period of the works however; there will be diversions in place. Customers living on these streets have been notified in advance about the work.

Construction traffic will need access to the area where improvement work is being carried out and to the site compound, which is to be located at the junction of Spring Garden Lane and Woodley Grove.

Customers who would like further information or have any special requirements, should call Northumbrian Water’s customer centre on 0845 717 1100 or visit www.nwl.co.uk.

Northumbrian Water will not need to gain access into customers’ homes while the work is being carried out in Ormesby and residents should be vigilant of bogus callers posing as officials from the water company.
