£350,000 flood protection scheme for Swarland homes

Essential work to help protect four homes in Swarland, near Alnwick, from flooding is to begin on Monday, February 24.

Northumbrian Water is investing £350,000 to upgrade the sewer network in Kenmore Road, Studley Drive and the surrounding area. The work, which is being carried out by contractor Lumsden and Carroll Ltd, is expected to take about three months to complete.

The scheme involves installing 390 metres of new sewer pipe along sections of Kenmore Road, Studley Drive and nearby farmland.

It will be necessary to have some traffic management in place during the course of the work. This will involve the closure of Kenmore Road, close to the junction with Studley Drive, from Monday, March 3 to Friday, March 14 and a rolling road closure along Studley Drive, from the junction with Kenmore Road, between Monday, March 10 and Friday, April 11.

Construction vehicles will need access to all working areas and a temporary site compound, which will be located on land behind Ladywell House, in Studley Drive. Those properties directly affected by the traffic restrictions will be notified about access and parking issues in advance.

Northumbrian Water is investing £150m between 2010 and 2015 to help protect areas throughout the region that are prone to flooding.

Dave Groark, the company’s project manager for the Swarland scheme, said: “The recent events in the south of the country have highlighted the devastation and misery that flooding can cause, that is why reducing the risk to customers’ homes and businesses is one of our top priorities.

“Although we appreciate there will be some disruption in the short term, we hope customers will welcome the benefits and protection the scheme brings. We are working closely with Northumberland County Council to reduce the impact of the work and will do our best to minimise any inconvenience.”

Nobody from Northumbrian Water or Lumsden and Carroll will need access to homes in the area while the work is being carried out.
