The first phase of essential work to help protect four homes in Winlaton, in the Derwent Valley, from flooding is to begin on Monday, January 27.
Northumbrian Water is investing £250,000 to upgrade the sewer network in Gibside View, Parkland Avenue and Parkgate Lane. The work, which is being carried out by contractor Seymour Civil Engineering, is expected to take about three months to complete.
The scheme will see 330m of new sewer pipe installed along sections of each of the three roads.
It will be necessary to have some traffic management in place during the course of the work. This includes:
• a rolling road closure along Parkgate Lane, between Park Lane and Parkland Avenue, from Monday, February 3 to Friday, March 7
• a rolling road closure along Parkland Avenue, between Parkgate Lane and Gibside View, from Monday, February 17 to Monday, March 24
• a rolling road closure along Gibside View, between Parkland Avenue and Derwent View, from Monday, March 4 to Thursday, April 3.
Construction traffic will need to access all working areas and a temporary site compound, which will be located on land adjacent to Parkgate Lane. Those properties directly affected by the traffic restrictions will be notified about access and parking issues in advance.
Northumbrian Water is investing £150m between 2010 and 2015 to help protect areas throughout the region that are prone to flooding.
Dave Groark, the company’s project manager for the scheme, said: “We appreciate the upset and devastation that flooding can cause, that is why reducing the risk to customers’ homes and businesses is one of our top priorities.
“Although we appreciate there will be some disruption in the short term, we hope customers will welcome the benefits and protection the scheme brings. We are working closely with Gateshead Council to reduce the impact of the work and will do our best to minimise any inconvenience.”
Nobody from Northumbrian Water or Seymour Civil Engineering will need access to homes in the area while the work is being carried out.
