As part of Northumbrian Water’s The Main Event, essential work is to begin next week on Askew Road in Gateshead.
This part of the £66 million programme involves renewing 880 metres of large diameter water mains. This will involve pulling a new 500mm diameter pipe, in sections, through the inside of the existing trunk mains underneath Askew Road.
The refurbishment work, which is being carried out by Seymour Civil Engineering, will begin in and around Askew Road on Monday September 16 and is expected to take up to six weeks to complete.
Stuart Tilley, Northumbrian Water’s project manager said: “The Main Event cleaning programme will make sure that our customers continue to receive excellent quality tap water in the future.
We appreciate that Askew Road can be busy and want to make sure that road users are given the opportunity to plan their journey to avoid delay.
Although there will be some disruption in the short term, we hope that our customers will appreciate the long term benefits this scheme brings.”
Traffic management will be required during the course of the work, with parts of Askew Road being reduced down to a single carriageway.
Customers who require further information should call Northumbrian Water’s customer centre on 0845 717 1100 or visit www.themainevent-nwl.co.uk.
Northumbrian Water will not need to gain access into customers’ homes while this work is carried out and residents should be vigilant of bogus callers posing as officials from the water company.
