Invitation to find out more about the Main Event

Northumbrian Water is to begin essential work in Fenham, Newcastle in early September as part of the £66 million trunk mains cleaning programme, The Main Event.

This part of the programme involves cleaning 44 kilometres of trunk mains in the Tyneside area. The water company’s contractor, Morrison Utility Services, will begin cleaning works on the initial 10 kilometre section of trunk mains running in and around Westgate Road on Monday 2 September 2013. This section of cleaning works is expected to run until early March 2014.

Residents are invited to find out more about the work at a customer event being held on Friday August 30 2013 at Westgate Community Complex, West Road, Fenham, between 3.00pm and 7.00pm.

Residents affected by the work will receive a letter and invitation to the customer event.

Richard Johnston, Northumbrian Water’s project manager, said: “We’re committed to improving the quality of drinking water as we all rely on tap water as part of our daily lives. The Main Event cleaning programme will protect tap water quality for the future and bring long term benefits to one million customers.”

Northumbrian Water and Morrison Utility Services will be working closely with archaeologists to protect cultural heritage whilst working along Westgate Road, as existing pipes follow the line of Hadrians Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It will be necessary to have traffic management in place during the course of this essential work. Partial lane closures will be in place at various times on sections of West Road and Westgate Road for up to approximately four weeks.

Northumbrian Water’s contractor, Morrison Utility Services, will let residents know in advance, where appropriate, when this traffic management will be in place and if they need the road to be clear of vehicles.

Northumbrian Water will not need to gain access into customers’ homes while this work is carried out and residents should be vigilant of bogus callers posing as officials from the water company.
