Dwaine hopes to be the next loo-loo

Dwaine Pipe

A song that’s more ‘number two’ than number one is hoping to be flushed with success when it is released on World Toilet Day (Monday November 19).

Dwaine Pipe, Northumbrian Water’s Love your drain campaign mascot, is releasing a single titled ‘Only toilet paper, pee and poo go down the loo’, after Dwaine’s Twitter and Facebook followers asked the water company to create a song from his catchphrase.

Dwaine Pipe’s single will be available from Monday (November 19) on Twitter @loveyourdrain or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/loveyourdwaine.

The song is about wipes, nappies, cotton buds and other items that block up North East drains and sewers on a daily basis and cost Northumbrian Water around £1.2million a year to clear.

The single’s aim is to encourage people of the North East to ‘love their loo’ this World Toilet Day, as 2.5 billion people worldwide don’t have access to safe toilet facilities.

Northumbrian Water is committed to raising funds for its adopted charity, WaterAid, which transforms peoples’ lives by giving them the basic human rights of clean, safe water, sanitation and hygiene education.

Andrew Blakemore, Chair of WaterAid Northumbria, said: “In this country we take toilets for granted, but the harsh reality is that one in three women worldwide risk shame, disease, harassment and even attack because they have nowhere safe to go to the toilet. At least 4,000 children die every day as a result of diseases caused by dirty water and poor sanitation.

“We’re all extremely lucky in the North East to have access to safe toilets but hundreds of people will experience the inconvenience of a toilet that won’t flush this month because of disposable products that don’t break down like toilet tissue. It’s easy to keep toilets flowing by placing wipes and sanitary products in a bin.”

Women and girls living without a safe toilet spend 98 billion hours each year finding a place to go in the nearby streets or bush. This is more time than the hours spent at work every year in the UK, France Sweden, Norway and Ireland combined.

Song lyrics to ‘Only toilet paper, pee and poo go down the loo’

Please think twice before you flush

There’s no need to be in a rush

Only toilet paper, pee and poo go down the loo.

Nappies and old cotton buds

Will do your drain more harm than good

Only toilet paper, pee and poo go down the loo.

Baby wipes should go in the trash

Cos a blocked drain could cost you cash

Only toilet paper, pee and poo go down the loo

Cotton wool’s not designed to flush

And dental floss could bung things up

Only toilet paper, pee and poo go down the loo.

Only toilet paper, pee and poo go down the loo.
