A £250,000 flood protection scheme gets underway in Ashington next week (Monday October 29).

Northumbrian Water is to upgrade the sewerage network on Lyndhurst Road and Canterbury Close, to reduce the risk of flooding to two properties in this area.

The work, which will take four months to complete, will involve installing 160 metres of new sewer pipe to the rear of Lyndhurst Road, and along the grassed area behind Canterbury Close.

Christopher Bond, project manager for the scheme, said: “In times of heavy rainfall, homes on Lyndhurst Road have experienced flooding, which we appreciate can be very distressing.

“Our priority is reducing the future risk of flooding, so we hope residents will welcome the protection that this scheme will bring and bear with us while the work is being carried out.”

It will be necessary to have traffic management in place during the course of this essential work. All dates are provisional and subject to change.

Bogus callers are known to operate in Northumbrian Water’s supply area. It is unusual for anyone from the water company to need access into a customer’s property while this work is carried out. If customers are in any doubt about the validity of a caller claiming to be from Northumbrian Water or the ‘water board’ they should ring the Northumbrian Water customer centre on 0845 717 1100.

For further peace of mind customers can also register a password – if anyone from the water company needs to access a registered customer’s home they will know the password. They should either ring the customer centre or log onto www.nwl.co.uk to register.
