Quarter of a million pounds is to be invested to reduce the risk of flooding in County Durham.

Northumbrian Water is start work on Monday October 22 2012 on a three month scheme in South Hetton, to reduce the risk of flooding to three properties on West Lane.

Work will involve installing 300 metres of new sewer pipe in fields to the east of Grasmere Terrace and upsizing a further 140 metres of sewer pipe at West Lane, between Windermere Road and Palmer Street.

Paul Davison, Northumbrian Water’s project manager for the scheme, said: “This scheme will offer some protection for the properties on West Lane that have flooded in times of heavy rainfall.”

It will be necessary to close one lane of West Lane between Monday December 3 2012 and Friday January 18 2013 to carry out this work. A signed diversion will be in place for heavy goods vehicles.

In an effort to minimise disruption over the Christmas period, there will be a two-week break in the works from Friday December 21 2012, with work beginning again on Monday January 7 2013.

During the course of the essential work construction traffic will need access to the areas where the work is being carried out, and the site compound, located in the field east of Grasmere Terrace.

Everything will be done, through careful planning with Durham County Council, to keep any disruption to a minimum. Customers who require further advice or have any special needs should ring Northumbrian Water on 0845 717 1100 or log on to

It is very unlikely that anyone from the water company will need to gain access into customers’ homes while the work is being carried out in South Hetton. If customers are in any doubt of a caller claiming to be from the water company, they should not let them into their home. They should ring the company’s customer centre to confirm the caller’s identity.
