Work to reduce the likelihood of flooding to six properties in Morpeth is to begin next month.
Northumbrian Water will invest £1 million to upgrade the sewer network in the Bennett’s Walk area. Work will begin on Thursday September 6 2012 and take up to five months to complete.
The water company’s project manager, Paul Davison, said: "We will be installing 120 metres of new sewer pipe along sections of Bennett’s Walk and Alexandra Road and constructing a new combined sewer overflow and sewage pumping station in the grassed area adjacent to Alexandra Road. We also need to construct a new outfall pipe, through the existing flood defence wall, near Bennett’s Walk.
"The first phase of this work will involve the diversion of gas mains before work on our sewer network can begin on Monday September 24 2012."
Combined sewer overflows are approved by the Environment Agency and are designed to discharge diluted waste water into watercourses in times of very heavy rainfall, to protect properties and surrounding land from flooding.
Residents are invited to find out more about the work at a customer event Northumbrian Water is holding on Wednesday September 5 2012 at Morpeth Town Hall (Corn Exchange), Market Place, Morpeth, NE61 1LZ between 3.00pm and 8.00pm.
The Environment Agency and Northumberland County Council will also be on hand to discuss their flood alleviation work within the wider Morpeth area.
Paul Davison continued: "Those affected by this work will receive further information and an invitation to our customer session in writing. I encourage them to come along to find out more. We are committed to working with other agencies to tackle flooding issues and this is demonstrated by the Environment Agency and Northumberland County Council supporting and attending our event."
It will be necessary for Northumbrian Water to have temporary traffic management in place during the course of the work. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times. Bennett’s Walk will be closed from Thursday September 6 2012 to Friday November 16 2012 and one lane of Alexandra Road will be closed from Monday October 1 to Friday December 21 2012.
Construction traffic will need access to working sites and to the site compound, which will be located in land adjacent to Goose Hill.
Residents may be asked to make alternative parking arrangements to allow this work to be carried out.
