Water workers keep Prince′s Trust crown

Million makers

A team from Northumbrian Water has taken the top spot once again in a competition to raise money for youth charity, The Prince’s Trust.

The group of eight beat off tough competition from Hewlett Packard, Dickinson Dees, Benfield Motor Group, Redcar and Cleveland Council, Zodiac Training and Tesco Bank to be crowned regional winners at the Million Makers event, held on Monday evening at the Gosforth Marriott hotel, Newcastle upon Tyne (February 13).

Million Makers is a national competition where teams are challenged to raise as much money as possible for The Trust to help local young people into jobs.

The water workers raised more than £21,000 through a variety of successful events, including a masquerade ball at Rainton Meadows Arena, a Zumbathon, a karaoke and cocktails evening and even a sky-high abseil down Kielder tower.

It is the second time in a year that a team from the water company have been awarded best in the region. Collectively the two teams from Northumbrian Water have raised £37,000 to help young people in the North East access work, education or training.

Having won the regional heat, the team have been invited to The Trust′s annual awards ceremony in London’s Leicester Square on Wednesday March 14 2012.

Customer team leader, Nichola Shields from Ushaw Moor in Durham, accepted the award. She said: “We’re ecstatic to have won and really proud that our efforts are going to help others in the region.

“It was great to meet some of The Trust’s young ambassadors and see how much their lives have changed from the funds that have been raised.”

Chris Gray, from the Prince’s Trust in the North East, said: “We are delighted to work in partnership with Northumbrian Water. Their fundraising will help to support almost 4,000 young people in the North East this year. The team have been thoroughly professional in their approach to this challenge demonstrating excellent skills in leadership, project management, communication and teamwork.”

The Prince of Wales’s charity has helped more than 3,800 young people in the North East in the last 12 months, including 360 business start ups.
