Blaydon sewer improvements

14.02.2012

Essential work to renew a sewer in Blaydon is to begin next week.

Northumbrian Water is to install 650 metres of new pipework along the north side of Chainbridge Road and the A695 Blaydon Highway, replacing the original cast iron sewer.

The £170,000, three-month scheme starts on Monday February 20 2012.

Project manager for the scheme, Peter Trees, said: “It’s essential that we replace the existing sewer as it is not as reliable as it used to be.

“Gateshead Council has authorised the traffic management required to allow our contractor to carry out the work. Although we appreciate that this type of work causes disruption, we thank customers, businesses and commuters for their patience in advance and we would like to reassure customers that we will carry out the work as quickly as possible.”

Electronic signage is currently in place around the A695 Blaydon Highway to give motorists advance warning of traffic management and provisional dates are shown in the table below. A temporary 30mph speed restriction will also be in place on Chainbridge Road and the A695 Blaydon Highway.

Businesses on Chainbridge Industrial Estate will remain open for trading as usual and the level crossing at Chainbridge Road will remain fully operational at all times throughout the work.

Construction traffic will need access to the areas where the work is being carried out, and the contractor’s compound, located in land off Tundry Way, on Chainbridge Road Industrial Estate.

Anyone with any concerns should call the water company’s customer centre on 0845 717 1100 or log on to www.nwl.co.uk.

It is very unlikely that anyone from Northumbrian Water, or contractor Lumsden & Carroll Civil Engineering Limited, to require access into customers’ homes while the work is being carried out in Blaydon. Customers should be vigilant of bogus callers claiming to be from the water company.
