Utility company Northumbrian Water is sparkling once again in the UK’s leading benchmark of responsible business practice.

The water company is one of only 15 UK companies to be awarded the highest possible rating of Platinum Plus status in Business in the Community’s annual Corporate Responsibility Index, published today (June 8 2011).

The Index examines the business strategy of around 150 UK companies to honour organisations that integrate and improve corporate responsibility throughout their business operations.

Today’s achievement means that Northumbrian Water has stayed at the top since the Platinum Plus category was introduced three years ago. After being awarded the two-year title in June 2009, the utility has once again achieved the highest possible ranking.

Louise Hunter, Northumbrian Water’s head of corporate responsibility, said: “We are very proud to have attained Platinum Plus status for the second time. The award is a reflection of our long-term commitment to responsible business practice, and also of the efforts of each and every one of our employees who’ve helped to build this into our day to day operations.”

Stephen Howard, Business in the Community’s chief executive, said: “I congratulate Northumbrian Water on achieving Platinum Plus in the 2011 BITC Corporate Responsibility Index.

“It is a challenging time, but the results of this year’s Index demonstrate that companies are still focused on transforming their businesses in order to have a positive impact on society. All the companies who participated this year are at different stages in their responsible business journey, but they are all taking these issues seriously and are prepared to lead by example.”

In addition to Platinum Plus status, Northumbrian Water has also received a Big Tick Award for Excellence in Education, for its partnership and continued commitment to Castle View Enterprise Academy in Sunderland. The water company is lead sponsor of the state-of-the-art Academy, which opened its doors in September 2009 and is already raising educational performance and aspirations for the local community.

Corporate Responsibility is embedded into Northumbrian Water’s everyday business practice. Its employee volunteering programme, Just an hour, encourages employees to spend at least 15 hours of paid, work time every year supporting community initiatives. Northumbrian Water also provides support by way of partnerships, sponsorship activities, grant giving and donations.
