Residents are being invited to find out more about a £1.1 million flood protection project in a Northumberland village.
Northumbrian Water is to begin work on Monday October 3 2011, to increase the capacity of the sewerage network in Seaton Sluice. The scheme will take around five months to complete.
Customers are invited to find out more about the work on Tuesday September 27 2011 at 6.00pm, at Seaton Sluice County Middle School, Alston Grove, NE26 4JS.
In times of extremely heavy rainfall the sewerage network has struggled to cope with the volume of storm water, which has resulted in flooding to 11 properties at Astley Gardens, Astley Villas, St. Ronan’s Drive and Seafield Mews.
David Groark, project manager for the scheme, said: “Reducing the risk of property flooding is one of Northumbrian Water’s priorities and over the next five years we intend to invest more than £120 million to reduce this risk.
“The work will involve installing 100 metres of new sewer pipe adjacent to the A193 Links Road and renewing a further 50 metres of sewer pipe at Astley Gardens.
“We will also be building an underground storm water storage tank in land adjacent to the A193 Links Road, opposite Seafield Mews, to provide an additional 1.6 million litres of storm water storage. In times of heavy rainfall water will be stored in the tank, until it can be returned to the sewerage network after the storm.”
It will be necessary to have traffic management in place during the course of this essential work. All dates given are provisional and may change.

In an effort to minimise disruption, traffic management on Links Road and St. Ronan’s Drive has been scheduled to take place during the school half term holiday.
Construction traffic will need access to the area where improvement work is being carried out and to the site compound, in land adjacent to the A193 Links Road, opposite Seafield Mews.
Residents will receive written information about this essential work and are reassured that everything will be done to keep any disruption to a minimum. Those with special needs or any queries should ring the Northumbrian Water customer centre on 0845 717 1100.
The water company will not need to gain access into customers’ homes while the work is being carried out in Seaton Sluice, although access may be required to manholes located on private land.
Customers are urged to be vigilant of bogus callers. If they are in any doubt of a caller claiming to be from the water company, they should not let them into their home. They should ring the company’s customer centre to confirm the caller’s identity.
