Residents of a Newcastle community will soon benefit from an essential flood protection scheme.
Northumbrian Water is to invest more than half a million pounds to upgrade the sewerage network in the North Avenue area of Westerhope
The five month scheme, which will begin on Monday 21 November 2011, will involve upsizing 160 metres of sewer pipe along this road.
Graham Watson, Northumbrian Water’s project manager for the scheme, said: “We appreciate that flooding is distressing for customers and reducing the risk is one of Northumbrian Water’s main priorities.
“This scheme will offer protection for three homes on North Avenue that have flooded in times of heavy rainfall.
“As with all essential work, some temporary traffic management is necessary, but we hope customers will bear with us while we are working in the area. Customers should be reassured that we are doing all we can, through careful planning with Newcastle City Council, to keep disruption to a minimum.”
A sectional road closure will be in operation on North Avenue between Monday November 21 2011 and Friday March 30 2012, starting at 2 North Avenue and moving towards number 28. A diversion will be in place via Ellesmere Avenue and West Avenue.
In an effort to minimise disruption, there will be a two-week break in the work over the Christmas period, with work ending on Wednesday December 21 2011 until Thursday January 5 2012.
Construction traffic will need access to the areas where the work is being carried out, and the site compound, located in land off West Avenue, adjacent to Linhope Road.
Residents in the affected areas will receive detailed information about the work in writing.
Customers who require further advice or have any special needs should ring Northumbrian Water on 0845 717 1100 or log on to www.nwl.co.uk.
It is unusual for anyone from Northumbrian Water to require access into customers’ homes while the work is being carried out in Westerhope and customers should be vigilant of bogus callers claiming to be from the water company.
