A four month scheme to help prevent sewer flooding will begin this week.

Northumbrian Water has announced it is investing £850,000 to upgrade the sewerage network in the Chapel House area of Newcastle.

The improvement scheme will begin on Monday, July 25 2011. The work will involve installing a total of 530 metres of sewer pipe and will reduce the risk of flooding to five properties on Chadderton Drive and Caversham Road.

Danny Coyne, Northumbrian Water’s project manager for the scheme, said: “We appreciate the distress that flooding causes customers. Over the next few years Northumbrian Water intends to invest more than £120million to reduce this risk. In times of extremely heavy rainfall the sewerage network in this area has struggled to cope with the quantity of storm water. This scheme will reduce the likelihood of flooding in the future.”

During the course of the essential work it will be necessary to have traffic management in place. All dates are provisional and subject to change.

Location Traffic management Dates
Cayton Grove (outside numbers 43 to 63) Rolling road closure From Monday 8 AugustĀ until Friday 26 AugustĀ 2011
Chadderton Drive (between Cayton Grove and Caversham Road) Rolling road closure From Friday 26 August until Friday 30 September 2011

Construction traffic will need access to the site where improvement work is being carried out and to the site compound, located in the ground of Knop Law Primary School.

Residents in the affected areas will receive information about the work. Everything will be done to keep any disruption to a minimum. Customers who require further advice or have any special needs should ring Northumbrian Water on 0845 717 1100 or log on to www.nwl.co.uk

It is very unlikely that anyone from the water company will need to gain access into customers’ homes while the work is being carried out in the Newcastle area. If customers are in any doubt of a caller claiming to be from Northumbrian Water or ‘the water board’, they should not let them into their home. They should ring the company’s customer centre to confirm the caller’s identity.
