Flood protection session

10.01.2011

Residents from a Northumberland town are invited to find out more about a scheme to reduce the risk of homes flooding.

Northumbrian Water is to invest £1.3 million to upgrade the sewerage network in the Bedlington area and is inviting customers to an event to find out more about the work.

The improvement scheme, which will begin on Monday January 31 2011 and take up to six months to complete, will reduce the likelihood of 11 homes flooding on Nether Riggs, Acorn Avenue and Russell Terrace.

Representatives from the water company and its contractors will be on hand to give more detailed information at a customer event to be held on Thursday January 13 2011 at The Salvation Army, Hartford Road West, Bedlington, NE22 6HU, between 3.00pm and 7.00pm.

Paul Davison, project manager for the scheme, said: “Reducing the number of properties that flood in our region is one of our top priorities. Over the next five years we intend to invest more than £120million to reduce this risk.

“In times of extremely heavy rainfall the sewerage network in this area has struggled to cope with the quantity of storm water. The work to help resolve this will involve upgrading and upsizing 230 metres of sewer pipe and installing 1.2 kilometres of new sewer pipe. We will be working in sections of Nether Riggs, Harford Road, Millfield, Bedlington Bank, Demesne Drive, Acron Avenue and Horton Avenue.

“We will also work closely with archaeologists while working in the Millfield area to ensure we protect what lies beneath. Bronze Age relics were discovered during the construction of properties in this area in the 1930s.”

During the course of the essential work it will be necessary to have traffic management in place. All dates are provisional and subject to change.

Construction traffic will need access to areas where improvement work is being carried out and to the site compounds, located in land off Bedlington Bank and Elm Drive.

Residents are reassured that everything will be done, through careful planning with Northumberland County Council, to keep disruption to a minimum.

Customers who require further advice or have any special needs should ring Northumbrian Water on 0845 717 1100.

Regular updates on the progress of the scheme, and associated traffic management, will be available by logging onto www.acornavenuefloodscheme.co.uk from Monday January 31 2011.

It is very unlikely that anyone from the water company will need to gain access into customers’ homes while the work is being carried out in the Bedlington area. If customers are in any doubt of a caller claiming to be from the water company, they should not let them into their home. They should ring the company’s customer centre to confirm the caller’s identity.
