A six month scheme to help prevent sewer flooding will begin this week.

Northumbrian Water has announced it is investing £700,000 to upgrade the sewerage network in the Darlington area.

The improvement scheme will begin on Monday, January 17 2011. The work will involve upsizing a total of 350 metres of sewer pipe and will reduce the risk of internal flooding to four properties and external flooding to eight properties on Teal Road.

Graham Watson, Northumbrian Water’s project manager for the scheme, said: “We appreciate the distress that flooding causes customers. Over the next five years we intend to invest more than £120million to reduce this risk.

“In times of extremely heavy rainfall the sewerage network in this area has struggled to cope with the quantity of storm water. This scheme will provide some protection from flooding in the future.”

During the course of the essential work it will be necessary to have traffic management in place. All dates are provisional and subject to change.

Residents in the affected areas will receive information about the work. Everything will be done to keep any disruption to a minimum. Customers who require further advice or have any special needs should ring Northumbrian Water on 0845 717 1100 or log on to www.nwl.co.uk.

It is very unlikely that anyone from the water company will need to gain access into customers’ homes while the work is being carried out in the Darlington area. If customers are in any doubt of a caller claiming to be from the water company, they should not let them into their home. They should ring the company’s customer centre to confirm the caller’s identity.
