Reducing Redcar flood risk

08.04.2011

Residents are being invited to find out more about a multi-million pound flood protection project in Redcar.

Northumbrian Water is to begin work on a £2.5 million scheme on Monday May 2 2011, to increase the capacity of the sewerage network around the Kirkleatham Lane area of the town. Work will take around seven months to complete.

Customers affected by the work are invited to drop in and find out more at a customer information session to be held on Wednesday April 13 2011 at Sacred Heart RC Secondary School, Mersey Road, Redcar, TS10 1PJ, between 4.00pm and 7.00pm.

In times of extremely heavy rainfall the sewerage network has struggled to cope with the volume of storm water, which has resulted in flooding to 39 properties on Gordon Road, Mersey Road, Kirkleatham Lane, St. Joseph’s Court, Thames Road and Tees Road.

David Groark, project manager for the scheme, said: “Reducing the risk of property flooding is one of Northumbrian Water’s priorities and over the next five years we intend to invest more than £120 million to reduce this risk.

“The work will involve installing 1.2 kilometres of sewer pipe at Kirkleatham Lane, Mersey Road and Thames Road, and renewing a further 200 metres of sewer pipe at Kirkleatham Lane.

“We are also building two underground storage tanks, at Mersey Road and Coatham Marsh, with a capacity of three million and 750,000 litres. In times of heavy rainfall water will be stored in the tanks until it can be returned to the sewerage network after the storm.”

It will be necessary to have traffic management in place during the course of this essential work. All dates given are provisional and may change.

Residents will receive written information about this essential work and are reassured that everything will be done to keep any disruption to a minimum. Those with special needs or any queries should ring the Northumbrian Water customer centre on 0845 717 1100.

The water company will not need to gain access into customers’ homes while the work is being carried out in Redcar, although access may be required to manholes located on private land.

Customers are urged to be vigilant of bogus callers. If they are in any doubt of a caller claiming to be from the water company, they should not let them into their home. They should ring the company’s customer centre to confirm the caller’s identity.
