Sewer scheme session

05.10.2011

Residents from a North Yorkshire village are invited to find out more about a scheme to reduce the risk of homes flooding.

Northumbrian Water is to invest £395,000 to upgrade the sewer network in Brotton and is inviting customers to an event to find out more about the work.

The improvement scheme, which will begin on Monday October 17 2011 and take up to four months to complete, will reduce the likelihood of three homes flooding on Oak Road and Beech Grove.

Representatives from the water company and its contractors will be on hand to give more detailed information at a customer event to be held on Thursday October 13 2011 at St Peters Church of England Primary School, Marshall Drive, Brotton, TS12 2UW, between 4.00pm and 7.00pm.

Ian Davison, project manager for the scheme, said: “In times of severely heavy rainfall the sewerage network in this area has struggled to cope with the quantity of storm water. The work to help resolve this will involve installing 320 metres of new sewer pipe along sections of Marshall Drive, Marway Road and Oak Road.

“Reducing the number of properties that flood in our region is one of our top priorities and we have a continual investment programme to upgrade our assets. Customers can also help to look after our vast 30,000 kilometre sewer network by not flushing away items other than human waste and toilet paper and by not putting fats or oil down sinks. This will help to further prevent blockages and flooding.”

During the course of the essential work it will be necessary to have traffic management in place. All dates are provisional and subject to change.

Location Traffic management Dates
Marshall Drive Rolling road closure Monday 24 October 2011 to Friday 4 November 2011
Marway Road Rolling road closure Monday 31 October 2011 to Friday 3 February 2012
Oak Road Rolling road closure Monday 20 February 2012 to Friday 23 March 2012

Construction traffic will need access to areas where improvement work is being carried out and to the site compound, which will be located adjacent to the playing fields north west of Marshall Drive.

Residents are reassured that everything will be done, through careful planning with Redcar & Cleveland Council, to keep disruption to a minimum.

Customers who require further advice or have any special needs should ring Northumbrian Water on 0845 717 1100. Residents affected by this work have been sent an invitation to the customer information session and more detailed information in writing.

It is very unlikely that anyone from the water company will need to gain access into customers’ homes while the work is being carried out in the Brotton area. If customers are in any doubt of a caller claiming to be from the water company, they should not let them into their home. They should ring the company’s customer centre to confirm the caller’s identity.
