Cleadon sewer scheme

A four month scheme to help prevent sewer flooding will begin next week.

Northumbrian Water has announced it is investing £620,000 to upgrade the sewerage network in the Cleadon area.

The improvement scheme, which will begin on Monday, August 8, 2011, will reduce the risk of flooding to eight properties on Burdon Road.

Simon Bligh, Northumbrian Water’s project manager for the scheme, said: “The work will involve installing 325 metres of new sewer pipe along sections of Boldon Lane and Cleadon Lane and upsizing a further 260 metres of pipe along Burdon Road. We will also install a combined sewer overflow at the junction of Boldon Lane and Burdon Road.

“Combined sewer overflows are designed and consented by the Environment Agency to discharge wastewater into watercourses in times of very heavy rainfall to protect properties and surrounding land from flooding.”

During the course of the essential work it will be necessary to have traffic management in place. All dates are provisional and subject to change.

Construction traffic will need access to the site where improvement work is being carried out and to the site compound, which is to be located in the field north of Boldon Lane.

Residents in the affected areas will receive information about the work. Everything will be done to keep any disruption to a minimum. Customers who require further advice or have any special needs should ring Northumbrian Water on 0845 717 1100 or log on to www.nwl.co.uk.

It is very unlikely that anyone from Northumbrian Water, or its contractor, will need to gain access into customers’ homes while the work is being carried out in the Cleadon area. If customers are in any doubt of a caller claiming to be from the water company, they should not let them into their home but instead call the company’s customer centre on 0845 717 1100 to confirm the caller’s identity.
