Local residents are being invited to find out more about a multi-million pound sewerage scheme.
Northumbrian Water is to invest £4 million to transfer wastewater flows from Middleton One Row sewage treatment works to Stressholme treatment works, near Darlington.
It is necessary to transfer the flows following growth in the catchment in recent years, to cater for future growth, to ensure that the sewage treatment is as effective and efficient as possible and to meet ever increasing river water quality standards.
Residents in the area are invited to drop in, to find out more about the improvement work and how it may affect them, at a customer information session to be held on Thursday, February 19 2009 at the Devonport Hotel, 16 – 18 The Front, Middleton One Row, DL2 1AS between 2.00pm and 7.00pm.
The work, which is to begin on Monday, March 2 2009 and take up to 12 months to complete, will involve building a new pumping station and storm water storage tank on the site of the existing sewage treatment works at Middleton One Row. In times of heavy rainfall, water will be stored in the new storage tank to be returned to the sewerage network after the storm.
Paul Wood, Northumbrian Water’s project manager, said: “To enable us to transfer flows, four kilometres of new sewer pipe will be laid along Aislaby Lane, The Front, Church Lane, the footpath on Roman Way and then across fields until it reaches the Darlington to Stockton railway line, where the pipe will be tunnelled under the railway line and connect into the existing sewerage network.
"We are also currently investing £17 million to upgrade Stressholme sewage treatment works which, when the work is complete, will be capable of treating up to 70 million litres of wastewater per day.”
During the course of the work it will be necessary to have the below temporary traffic lights in place. Please note that the dates shown are provisional and may change.
Location: Aislaby Lane Between: Middleton One Row stw & Hill Rise Period: 2 March 09 to end March 09
Location: The Front Between: Hill Rise and Church Lane Period: mid March 09 to end May 09

Construction traffic will need access to sites where work it taking place and also to the water company’s site compound, which is to be located in a field next to Middleton One Row sewage treatment works. Customers are reassured that everything will be done to keep disruption to a minimum.
Northumbrian Water or their contractors will not require access into customers’ homes during the course of the work. Those affected by the work will receive an invitation to the customer information session and detailed information in writing.
