Thousands landed for WaterAid

People with a passion for angling are making a real difference saving lives in Africa.

Northumbrian Water’s partnership with international tackle company Hardy & Greys has so far raised £3,500 for the charity WaterAid this season and there are more fundraising events yet to be held.

Already the lives of almost 250 people in Africa have been transformed as the money raised will give them a life-saving supply of clean drinking water, safe toilets and hygiene education.

Following the WaterAid fly and bait bank fishing event held at County Durham’s Derwent reservoir in May the final of the boat pairs fundraiser was held at Kielder Water (Sunday 12 July) and fished by 30 fly anglers who qualified for the final from three previous heats.

Peter Pattinson, Kielder Assistant Operations Manager, said: “Changes in the weather and wind in the days leading up to the final made conditions tough for fishing but despite that there was a rod average of two fish per competitor.

“It was particularly pleasing to see several larger fish caught on the day – the biggest one at 7lb 4oz caught by Peter Crowe from Hartlepool was one of the largest landed at Kielder so far this season.”

Two more WaterAid fishing events will add to the fund. There is a bank holiday coarse match at Whittle Dene in the Tyne Valley on 31 August and a boat pairs competition in September at the company’s Essex & Suffolk Water Hanningfield trout fishery, near Chelmsford.

All the charity competitions are supported by Alnwick-based international tackle company Hardy & Greys which donates generous prize vouchers for the successful anglers and all proceeds from the days are donated to the charity.
