Residents are being invited to find out more about a multi-million pound flood alleviation scheme in North Shields.
Northumbrian Water is investing £3.7 million to increase the capacity of the sewerage network and install two storage tanks in the Preston Village area of the town.
The improvement work is to begin on Monday, May 18 2009 and will take up to ten months to complete.
Residents affected by the work are invited to drop in and find out more at a customer information session to be held on Wednesday, April 22 2009 at North Shields Rugby Club, Preston Village, North Shields between 2.00pm and 8.00pm.
In times of extremely heavy rainfall the sewerage network has struggled to cope with the volume of storm water, which has resulted in internal flooding to 44 properties and external flooding at a further 20 properties on Moor Crest Terrace, Pennyfine Close, Walton Park, Ingleside Road, Otterburn Road, Holly Road and the Monks Wood Estate.
Graeme Ridley, project manager for the Northumbrian Water scheme, said: “Reducing the risk of property flooding is one of Northumbrian Water’s priorities and this scheme will reduce the risk to 64 homes in Preston Village.
“The work will involve upgrading and increasing the diameter of 257 metres of sewer pipe which runs along Holly Road, Otterburn Road and Ingleside Road and relining a further 250 metres of sewer pipe in Preston Park, between Ingleside Road and Preston Road.
“We will also be installing two storage tanks, at West Monks Wood and North Shields Rugby Club, with a capacity of 160 and 3,500 cubic metres. In times of heavy rainfall wastewater will be stored in the tanks, to be returned to the sewerage network after the storm.
“Customers will benefit from dropping in at our customer information session where the project team will be on hand to answer any questions they may have.”
It will be necessary to have rolling road closures in place, for a short period of time, during the course of this essential work. Please note that the dates given are provisional and may change.
