Animal loving employees from a local water company have unleashed a charity pet calendar to raise vital funds for a North East rescue kennel.
Northumbrian Water staff have produced 500 copies of a 2009 calendar, featuring ‘pawtraits’ of 12 much-loved pets, to raise money for Stray Action for Dogs, based at Langley Moor, Durham. This charity provides a safe haven for stray dogs and cats until a suitable home can be found.
The lucky 12 pets featured in the calendar were selected following a competition in the water company’s internal newsletter.
Canine cuties include Ella, an english springer spaniel who lives in Woodstone Village, Houghton Le Spring with owner Donna Kindred, a finance assistant at the water company’s head office at Pity Me, Durham, Finn and Fergus, two lurchers who live in Seaburn with owner Alan Daley, a distribution technician at Washington water treatment works. Also included is Jasper, a staffordshire bull terrier who lives in Lanchester with owner Ellen Petrie and Otto, a cairnoodle who lives in Washington with owner Sharon Martin, both communications advisors based at Pity Me, Durham.
Model moggies include Gizmo, a long haired tabby cat, who lives in Consett with owner Shelley Tibbs and Cleo, a black and white cat who lives in Hetton Le Hole with owner Gemma Porter, both customer advisors at the water company’s head office.
Linda Forsyth, who runs Stray Action for Dogs, said: ”We are delighted with this support and will use the money raised to feed, innoculate and pay vet fees for all the strays.
“We currently have 40 dogs and 25 cats at the kennels and we have rescued more than 1600 dogs in the last two years from Sedgefield, Durham, Chester-le-Street, Darlington, Wear Valley and Teesdale Council dog wardens. We are committed to keeping all animals not reclaimed by their owners until we can rehouse them or find them a place of safety. No healthy animal is ever put down.”
Jane Morland, corporate responsibility team leader at Northumbrian Water, said: “We have supported Stray Action for Dogs for a number of years now, providing food and warm bedding for the dogs each Christmas. We’re not just a water company and like to be immersed in the communities we serve, even looking after our furry customers!
“This year, an employee suggested creating a pet calendar too and we thought it was a great fundraising idea. The cost of producing the calendar has already been covered from internal staff orders, so all money raised from future sales will go directly towards providing a safe haven for stray dogs and cats until they are reclaimed or find new owners.”
Copies of the calendar, priced at £3 each, can be bought from the Stray Action for Dogs shop at Deerness Boarding Kennels & Cattery, Mill Road, Littleburn Industrial Estate, Langley Moor, Durham DH7 8HF. Telephone and email orders are also accepted, by calling 0191 378 0439 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
