Storage tank solution

Hundreds of thousands of pounds will be invested to reduce the risk of homes flooding in Hartlepool.

Northumbrian Water is investing £900,000 to upgrade 200 metres of sewer pipe and install a 220 cubic metre storage tank in the Glentower Grove and Stanmore Grove areas of the town.

The improvement work is to begin on Monday, February 16 2009 and will take up to five months to complete.

Residents affected by the work are invited to drop in and find out more at a customer information session to be held on Wednesday, January 28 2009 at Seaton Carew Golf Club, Tees Road, Seaton Carew, TS25 1DE between 3.00pm and 7.00pm.

In times of extremely heavy rainfall the sewerage network has struggled to cope with the volume of water, which has resulted in internal flooding to three properties and external flooding at a further three properties in Glentower Grove.

In times of heavy rainfall water will be stored in the tank, which is eight metres in diameter by nine metres deep, to be returned to the sewerage network afterwards.

Paul Davison, project manager for the Northumbrian Water scheme, said: “Reducing the risk of property flooding is one of Northumbrian Water’s priorities and this is one of dozens of improvement schemes we will be carrying out, throughout the region, over the next couple of years to upgrade our vast sewerage network.

“I encourage customers in the area to drop in at our customer information session where they can find out more about the work and how it will affect them.”

Residents in the affected areas will receive information about the work and an invitation to the customer information session in writing.

It will be necessary to have traffic management in place, for a short period of time, during the course of this essential work. Sections of Stanmore Grove will be closed in mid-April for up to three weeks and sections of Glentower Grove will be closed in early May for up to six weeks.

Construction traffic will need access to the sites where improvement work is being carried out and will access the site compound, which is to be located in land to the rear of Stanmore Grove, via a newly constructed temporary road.

Customers who require further information or who have special needs should ring Northumbrian Water’s customer centre on 0845 717 1100.

The water company will not need to gain access into customers’ homes while the work is being carried out in Hartlepool. Access may be required to manholes located on private land.

If customers are in any doubt of a caller claiming to be from the water company, they should not let them into their home. They should ring the company’s customer centre to confirm the caller’s identity.
