Receiving royal recognition

Employees from a local water company have celebrated being recognised by Her Majesty The Queen.

One hundred and fifty Northumbrian Water staff, from across the business and region, were able to represent their colleagues and witness the Queen’s Award for Enterprise being presented to the company’s managing director at a prestigious lunch at Durham Castle.

John Cuthbert accepted the top accolade from Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of County Durham, Sir Paul Nicholson, in the city where the water company is based.

Representatives from a selection of corporate partners which contributed significantly to the water company’s success, including the Tees Valley Community Foundation, Durham Constabulary, SAFC Community Foundation, Newcastle Eagles, North East Chamber of Commerce and The Prince’s Trust, also enjoyed the special occasion.

Northumbrian Water’s managing director, John Cuthbert, said:  “I am hugely proud of and grateful to everyone who has helped us to achieve this award, which recognises sustainable development.  We make a very big effort to give something back to local communities, from Berwick down to North Yorkshire and across to the Pennines, contribute to the regional and local economy and protect and enhance the environment.

“All of our 3,000 employees have contributed to this wonderful success.  Staff that enjoyed this special occasion were chosen because they have performed particularly well in their job or gone above and beyond the line of duty.”

Northumbrian Water was one of 12 companies nationally to receive the Queen’s Award for Enterprise and the only company in the North East to be recognised in this category.

This crowned the success the reigning utility company of year 2008 (Utility Week) has enjoyed.  The water company was recently short-listed in the international Beyond Sport Awards for Best Corporate Social Responsibility in Sport – showcasing strong sporting partnerships in the North East.  It also achieved a BITC Platinum Plus rating, ‘Impact on Society Big Tick’ and North East Contact Centre of the Year (under 200 seats).
