Residents of North Shields are to benefit from a £1.1 million flood protection scheme.
Northumbrian Water is to install 590 metres of new sewer pipe on Grey Street, Whitby Street, Jackson Street and Jackson Street West and renew 20 metres of sewer pipe at Kensington Gardens.
The seven-month scheme, which will begin on Monday, September 14, 2009, will increase the capacity of the sewerage network and reduce the risk of flooding to ten properties on Coburg Street, Grey Street, Jackson Street West and Linskill Terrace.
Customers are invited to find out more about the work and raise any questions or concerns they may have at a customer information session on Monday, September 7 2009, between 4.00pm and 7.00pm at Percy Park Rugby Football Club, Preston Avenue, North Shields, NE30 2BE.
Graeme Ridley, project manager for the scheme, said: “Reducing the risk of flooding is one of Northumbrian Water’s top priorities and this work is one of the 33 flood protection schemes we are carrying out throughout the region this financial year, with an investment of £27 million.
“Residents should be reassured that we are doing everything we can, through careful planning with North Tyneside Council, to keep disruption to a minimum.”

Customers who require further advice or have any special needs should ring Northumbrian Water on 0845 717 1100 or log on to www.nwl.co.uk.
It is unusual for anyone from the water company to require access into customers’ homes while the work is being carried out in the North Shields area. If customers are in any doubt of a caller claiming to be from the water company, they should not let them into their home. They should ring the company’s customer centre to confirm the caller’s identity.
