A winning culture for success


The region’s water company has won yet another award.

Northumbrian Water has been honoured for employee development, customer service, business growth and the contribution it has made to the region.

It was presented with a Culture for Success Large Employer Award by Service Network, at a celebration evening at The CastleGate in Newcastle upon Tyne last night (23 April).

This latest honour comes in the same week as Northumbrian Water received a prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the category of Sustainable Development.

The Culture for Success Awards were launched to showcase North East companies that invest in the talent, passion and expertise of their own workforce, while also promoting exceptional customer care.

Awards are flowing at the water company. It was crowned Utility Company of the Year at the end of 2008. Then company-wide consultation in the People Plan, a five-year human resources strategy, earned the CIPD Employee Engagement Award in March, in addition to the two awards scooped this week.

Andrew Dixon, NGI chief executive and judge and compere of this year’s Culture for Success Awards, said: "These are great awards; they are about the people who make companies work. In such difficult economic times, it is those companies who recognise the impact that good employees have on customer service and profitability, that will not only survive the recession but accelerate out of it.

“Northumbrian Water′s main work literally flows into every home and business in the region but it also puts its people and the communities it works in at the heart of what it does.

“The culture of success is evident in the diverse range of work it carries out including that with the Kielder Partnership and many business forums and community groups in the North East."

“We have worked hard to develop a company culture that fosters success in all areas of the business and it is an honour to be recognised as a company that makes a valuable contribution to the region, whether it through our business activities or through our work in the community.”

Northumbrian Water is immersed in the communities it serves, supporting charitable, environmental, sporting and cultural activities in its supply area, from Berwick down to North Yorkshire and across to the Pennines. Its Just an Hour scheme allows all employees to spend up to 15 hours a year supporting community and environmental projects.
