Quality invitation

08.05.2009

Residents in the North Gosforth area are invited to find out more about major work to safeguard excellent tap water quality.

Northumbrian Water is to clean six kilometres of large diameter water pipe which runs along the Great North Road, Newcastle.

Work to clean one kilometre of 30-inch pipe on the southbound carriageway is underway and when this is complete the water company will begin to clean five kilometres of 18-inch pipe on the northbound carriageway, between Sandy Lane and Gosforth High Street, and a section of pipe on Broadway West.

Pipe cleaning on the northbound carriageway is to begin week commencing Monday, May 18 2009 and will take up to five months.  To maintain water supply to properties, Northumbrian Water will move water around the network which may result in people in the North Gosforth area receiving discoloured water.

Customers are invited to raise any questions or concerns they may have at a customer information session to be held on Friday, May 15 2009 at Northern Football Club, McCracken Park, Great North Road, Gosforth, Newcastle, NE3 2DT between 1.00pm and 6.00pm.

Northumbrian Water’s project manager, Richard Johnston, said:  “This work will reduce the likelihood of discoloured water which is one of our top priorities in response to customer feedback.

“Temporary traffic management will gradually move along the northbound carriageway, between Sandy Lane and Gosforth High Street, from week commencing Monday, May 18 2009.  We appreciate that this will cause delays as we are working on one of the region’s busiest roads.  We ask people to please allow extra time for their journey and thank them for their patience in advance.  We will do everything we can to minimise inconvenience.”

This work is part of a four-year, £30 million scheme which will involve cleaning or upgrading 156 kilometres of trunk water mains which supply water to 500,000 customers in South East Northumberland, North Tyneside and north of Newcastle.  Trunk mains are large pipes which move water around the network.

Water supplies should be maintained and if customers receive discoloured water, which will still be safe to use, they should run the first mains-fed supply for up to 30 minutes until it runs clear.
