Phase two of Durham flood plan

18.08.2009

The second phase of a major flood protection project is soon to begin on the outskirts of Durham City.

Northumbrian Water plans to start work on a £500,000 scheme to protect 33 homes on Devonshire Road and Bedfordshire Drive in Belmont, on Monday, September 14, 2009, for up to six months. This anticipated start date is dependent on fine weather permitting the harvesting of crops adjacent to Renny’s Lane.

Residents of Belmont are invited to drop-in and find out more about the work at a customer information session being held on Wednesday, September 2 2009 between 3.30pm and 7.00pm at Belmont Parish Hall, Broomside Lane, Belmont, Durham, DH1 2QR.

The first phase of work, a £500,000 investment to reduce the risk of flooding to 54 properties on Filby Drive, Grinstead Way, Kinley Road and Wantage Road in Carrville, began at the end of April 2009 and is on schedule to be complete by the end of this month.

Plans for the remaining phases of work, that will hopefully be carried out in the Grange Road and Kirkstone Drive area of Carrville and at Brackendale Road in Belmont, are in progress.

Ashley Ferguson, project manager for the scheme, said: “The Belmont and Carrville areas have suffered localised flooding a number of times in the past, most recently in July 2009 when the region experienced extremely heavy downpours.

“This phase of work will involve upsizing 775 metres of sewer pipe across Renny’s Lane and up Warwickshire Drive, Devonshire Road, Bedfordshire Drive and Cornwall Walk, to increase the capacity of the sewerage network and reduce the risk of future flooding.

“As with any essential work, some disruption is inevitable, but we hope that the residents of Belmont will welcome the scheme and the protection it offers, and bear with us while work is being carried out. “

Temporary road closures will be in place at various locations on Devonshire Road, Warwickshire Drive,  Bedfordshire Drive, Cornwall Walk and between Renny’s Lane and Warwickshire Drive, between Monday, October 19 2009 and Monday, February 1 2010. The water company will not work for two weeks over the Christmas period.

Construction traffic will need access to the areas where the work is being carried out, and to the two site compounds, located in farmland on Renny’s Lane and in land between Bedfordshire Drive and Yorkshire Drive.

Residents in the affected areas will receive detailed information about the work in writing.

Customers who require further advice or have any special requirements should ring Northumbrian Water on 0845 717 1100 or log on to www.nwl.co.uk.

It is unusual for anyone from the water company to require access into customers’ homes while the work is being carried out in the Belmont area. If customers are in any doubt of a caller claiming to be from the water company, they should not let them into their home. They should ring the company’s customer centre to confirm the caller’s identity.
