Steve Cram and Berghaus issue a racing challenge

31.08.2010

A major part of this year’s inaugural Kielder Marathon weekend is the Run-Bike-Run team event on Saturday 16 October.

Teams of three will tackle a relay that covers the full marathon distance: a 11km run, followed by a 26km biking section and finishing with a 5km run.

North East outdoor brand Berghaus has embraced the challenge of the Kielder Run-Bike-Run and is encouraging staff to take part by underwriting the cost of entering 10 teams into the event.

Collectively, they will all also be raising funds for outdoor charity the Outward Bound Trust. Among the Berghaus entries is an all female team and trios representing product design, marketing, sales and the company’s senior executives. Competition to be the leading Berghaus team is going to be fierce.

Kielder Marathon founder Steve Cram today visited Berghaus’ global HQ in Sunderland to assess the form of the various teams and also issue a challenge to the rest of the North East to get their own entries in to the Run-Bike-Run event. There are three categories in the event - corporate, family and open – with prizes on offer for the first, second and third placed teams in each.

Steve Cram comments: “The Run-Bike-Run event is a fantastic addition to the Kielder Marathon weekend. Because the marathon itself is fully subscribed, it gives people who missed out on a place this year the opportunity to be part of the event. However, it’s also a great challenge in its own right, following a fantastic course around the shoreline of Kielder Water, known as the Lakeside Way.

“It’s clear to me that some of the Berghaus teams are going to be very competitive and there is some great rivalry developing within the company. I’m really impressed by how the teams are being subsidised and staff encouraged to participate. I hope that other companies are inspired to follow this lead and take up the challenge. There’s still time to enter and I’m sure that the Berghaus teams are keen to take on all comers!”

Sarah Sculpher, Berghaus marketing director, comments: “As soon as we heard about the Kielder Run-Bike-Run, Berghaus teams started to take shape. We decided that this event would be a great opportunity to encourage even more staff to get into the outdoors and enjoy some healthy competition. We have underwritten the entry costs for up to 10 teams, on the understanding that the competitors use their participation to raise funds for The Outward Bound Trust, a charity that Berghaus is closely associated with, and which does a huge amount to use the outdoors to educate and inspire young people.

“I’m really looking forward to playing my part in making sure that the all girls team set a good pace on 16 October. We’ve got a bit of training to do yet, but I’m confident that we’ll give our colleagues a good run, and bike, for their money!”
