This section contains all the information you need relating to sewerage services for new developments and the protection of our existing sewerage network.
Follow the links above to:
- Download a pre development enquiry application, sewer adoption, diversion or abandonment application or a new connection application.
- Find information on building over or close to sewers, first time sewerage and sewer requisitions.
As part of your development works, you may need to access our assets (eg: sewers, manholes, etc) to gather information such as depths & pipe sizes, or CCTV surveys for sewer closure and diversion applications.
Access to our assets is strictly prohibited without prior approval from us - this includes everything from lifting covers to full confined space entries. In order for us to assess your ability to complete this type of activity safely, you will need to send us a completed application form which can be downloaded below.
Health & Safety Statement
A confined space refers to any place, including any vessel, tank, container, pit, bund, chamber, cellar or any other similar space which, by virtue of its enclosed nature, creates conditions that give rise to a likelihood of an accident, harm or injury of such a nature as to require emergency action due to:
• the presence or reasonable foreseeable presence of:
• flammable or explosive atmospheres
• harmful gas, fume or vapour
• free flowing solid or an increasing level of liquid
• excess of oxygen
• excessively high temperature
• the lack or reasonably foreseeable lack of oxygen
For clarity, any sewer is considered a confined space and there are certain lifesaving rules that must apply before any entry into a sewer as outlined in The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Confined Spaces) Regulations 2001. Northumbrian Water also have strict rules in place whenever entering a Northumbrian Water owned sewer.
You are not permitted to enter a Northumbrian Water sewer at any time during the job you are carrying out. If for whatever reason you need to enter a sewer you should stop the job immediately and contact Northumbrian Water for further guidance and support. If a confined space entry is required a documented site specific risk assessment must be undertaken before entry. Atmosphere monitoring before and during the entry must take place, a tripod and winch system used and a clear rescue plan must be in place. Northumbrian Water should review any risk assessment and method statement before the entry has taken place.
