Washington flood prevention scheme to cost £1.2m

04/03/2010

More than £1m is to be spent on measures to ease the risk of flooding in parts of Wearside.

The £1.2m Northumbrian Water project will see an underground storm water storage tank created in the Avebury Drive area of Washington.

The project, which is due to begin on 22 March, is likely to take seven months to complete.

Recent heavy rain resulted in 19 properties being flooded in Avebury Drive and neighbouring Glebe Crescent.

Project manager David Groark said: "We appreciate that flooding is distressing and reducing the risk of property flooding is one of our priorities.

"The work will involve installing an underground storage tank in open land adjacent to Avebury Drive, with a capacity of 1.2 million litres (220,000 gallons).

"In times of heavy rainfall wastewater will be stored in the tank, to be returned to the sewerage network after the storm."
