Magic will be making a splash in schools next month thanks to a project being backed by Northumbrian Water.
The Durham-based firm, which supplies water and waste water services to homes and businesses across the North East, has signed up to sponsor the schools’ magic programme as part of the South Tyneside International Magic Festival 2010.
The programme, which runs in the first four days of the week-long festival - March 8 to March 11 - will see magicians touring schools around South Tyneside and using magic to communicate important messages like how to stay healthy and why children shouldn’t talk to strangers.
A number of the sessions will also have an environmental theme and use water-based tricks to show how companies like Northumbrian Water provide people with safe and clean water and help teach the students how they can play a part in conserving this precious resource.
Alistair Baker, Communications and PR Manager for Northumbrian Water, said: “Young people across the North East are already playing an important role in protecting and preserving the environment and our water supplies and we hope that more will spread the messages after seeing them portrayed in magical form.”
The South Tyneside International Magic Festival is organised by South Tyneside Council in association with overall sponsors Magic Box and former president of the Magic Festival, Martin Duffy,
As well as the magic in schools programme sponsored by Northumbrian Water, this year’s event which marks the festival’s seventh year, will also feature a family magic show with performers from Newcastle’s magic circle on Wednesday, March 10 and two gala shows featuring magicians from across the globe on Friday and Saturday, March 12 and 13.
There will also be a three-day convention running from Friday, March 12 until Sunday, March 14, where professional magicians and enthusiasts from around the world can gather to hone their magical skills.
Councillor Tracey Dixon, South Tyneside Council’s Lead Member Culture and Wellbeing said: “The Magic Festival is a real highlight in the North East entertainment calendar, particularly for the students who receive a visit from one of the travelling magicians.
“Magic is a great way to convey messages to young people and we are delighted to have Northumbrian Water on board this year.”
